A hidden treasure by Sarah Y. at InsiderPages

Jess and Jim's is a hidden treasure in Kansas City. I had lived here for almost two years before I found this great restaurant. If you go, I would recommend their cheeseburger if you're looking for something simple. Order a steak if you want the best steak you've ever had! The lunch prices were very reasonable. The best service around!

A family member from St Louis told me they had the best steak in there life here. So when we had a opportunity to be in K C, we had to try it.
A little out of the way for where we were staying.
Steaks were very good, not out best ever...
they are not grilled with hash marks but put on the grill so the carmelization is over the entire side. I suppose it keeps in juices, but makes the meat more crusty than we are used to.
The waitress brought my husband the wrong steak and did not notice it till he told her. She did not appear to be brand new there, I would think they would check thier orde before bringing it out, good wait staff always do.
so they cooked him another fairly promptly, but I was 1/2 done by time he got his.
Salad was pretty generic, but ok.
Seems like there's too many good places to eat to go back, I assume KC has some truely great steak places, just not this one.
- Pros: a 'joint' not a chain
- Cons: not special enough to go back
I've had better steak at Denny's

We were new to the KC area, and asked where to go for steak. We were told Jess & Jim's was a KC tradition, so we went there, expecting a treat. We were completely underwhelmed! I think this place may have been great in the distant past, but I think now they must be living off their reputation. Otherwise, I can't understand why anyone would give this place such high ratings. The steak was not special at all, and we paid way, way too much. We won't be going back.
- Cons: pricey
Just an average experience

If you are in the area its a fun place to try.Off the beaten path a bit. A good place to eat and relax.A very down home style to the place. I was excited about the steak. It was definitely tender and flavorful, but my at least a quarter of the steak was fat. I spent some time trimming it. The baked potatoes are definitely one of a kind, but overkill for me with cheese, bacon and a ridiculous amount of butter piled on. The prices range 20-40$ per steak so it is definitely not cheap.
BEST STEAK IN ANY STATE

Took our son and his wife there as we had coupons. It was still pricey but delicious! We all had great steaks - tender and cooked to perfection. Also, we've never seen beets as an appetizer but it's a great idea if you like them, and I do! Definitely worth the trip as it is sort of out of the way.
- Pros: Excellent steak, Great baked potato, Good service
- Cons: Poor parking
It's okay

I wouldn't say this place is terrible by any means, but I do agree that it does not live up to its hype. My rib-eye was a good-sized portion, but lacking in flavor. The ambience is that of a mountain lodge - which is great if we had been in the mountains - but it's Missouri. As stated in the subject line... It's okay, but don't drive out of your way to get there; if you're driving through though, give it a shot.
- Pros: beets-they're great
This place is great

I took my mom there for her birthday and she had to take most of her syeak and half her baked potato home because it was so huge. The service was outstanding, the atmosphere was great also.
- Pros: service, food, prices
very poor for KC

this place is a huge disappointment. very over-rated. who cares if truman ate there. probably contributed to an early demise!
This steakhouse put the Martin City District on the map with their friendly service and meat-and-potatoes menu.

In Short
Family owned for more than 60 years, Kansas City appreciates this gem but out-of-towners make a point to visit, too, thanks to national publicity. USA Today declared Jess & Jim's one of the nation's top steakhouses. All beef is hand-cut and trimmed on the premises and ranges from 5-ounce filets to the 30-ounce porterhouse. Prime rib is served Sunday through Thursday, while pork chops, ham steaks, chicken and seafood round out the dinner menu. Burgers and sandwiches are popular on the lunch menu.
