Meh.
by janeybobaney at Citysearch
I was extremely unimpressed with my visit to Figlio today.
For a while now, my boyfriend has talked about taking me there & making a date of it. We are young, early 20's but we've both been raised around the restaurant business so if something is listed as a 4 or 5 star restaurant, we expect the best... especially for the price. Plus we're foodies, so we love to try new things.
This particular day may have been a bad day... we showed up a little after open for their lunch menu. The host who greeted us was very darling, nice & cheerful. We were the first there so we got the pick of the restaurant so we sat right in front of the window, overlooking the entrance to the plaza. We noticed that the ceiling had smoke stains all over it, which was extremely unsightly. We also noticed the the paint outside/inside was peeling &/or starting to rust. Regardless, we continued with our meal.
The waitress was terribly awkward, very cold & distant. We are young, but again, don't let that be the deciding factor on tipping-- trust me, if we get great service, we pay for it. A little later a group of older ladies walked in & sat in our section-- COMPLETELY different treatment than we got. She was warm & friendly, even cracking jokes about the tie she was wearing. This made us extremely uncomfortable.
The food. I don't know what I was expecting, but I ordered something extremely generic, fettucini alfredo-- I was craving white sauce & it was on the lunch portion. I don't know how an Italian restaurant messes this dish up- it's a staple! The presentation was pretty, but it tasted so bland... I had to add so much salt & pepper that I know I shouldn't have had to. My boyfriend ordered Chicken Spedini-- mediocre & bland at best. The chicken was actually burnt.
After the meal, she casually mentioned dessert, & the way she said it made me feel like she was assuming we wouldn't, because we probably didn't have any money.... but I asked for the menu. The creme brule was delicious. That's really it. We ended up tipping over 45% so that the next time she sees young people she'll think otherwise.
We were extremely underwhelmed, to say the least.
Figlios - things have changed for the worse!
by Lori Kansas City at Citysearch
I am posting this review to recommend you seek dinner elsewhere on the Plaza! If there was a less-than-one-star option, this would be it!
We have dined at Figlios for over 20 years, and have many positive memories there when the chefs and service were top notch - obviously things have changed! The food is poor, frozen/fried calamari dredged in balsamic reduction, and when you observe table to table comparisons of the serving sizes, it's not the same. We were given 10 tiny strips of frozen and fried calamari (1" max) swimming in balsamic (not the garlic aoili and marinara from back in the day) - yet the table next to us had 2 cups of calamari, heaped atop their plate. When we inquired about it, the waiter condescendingly explained that "their portion is the same size, it's just on a different plate!" The warm wilted lettuce drenched in red wine vinegar was passed off as caesar salad, and it had a cup and a half of croutons dunmped on top. The server was distracted, the restaurant was empty (now we know why) and when we asked for the calamari to be removed fro the table, a second server came to the table and asked if we wanted to purchase an additional appetizer to make up for it!
Save your time and money, there is apparently new management that has ruined the Figlios of old (the general manager didn't even care enough to respond to an e-mail), and you'd get better service, food and experience from Winstead's across the park or Buca Di Beppo if you want home made italian food prepared to order and superior service.
- Pros: Ability to warn others before they waste their money
- Cons: Poor food, poor service, and uncaring management
Should give up their prime location to a more deserving resteraunt
by juice2004 at Citysearch
Our first clue should have been that on a beautiful Saturday night on the Country Club Plaza, we were able to get a table at 7:30 with under a 5 minute wait. The main room was about 80% full with half of the guests under 18 and there for Homecomming.
Clue two should have been that in living in KC for 3 years we have not once heard ANYONEmention this resteraunt. We still thought that maybe we had found a "hidden gem". WRONG!
We has "sauteed" artichoke hearts for an appitizer. They were actually frozen artichoke hearts warmed up with butter and a little garlic. They had absolutely no taste.
My wife got the "tour of Italy" for dinner as she couldn't decide between something with red sause and something with white. This had both. The lasagna was cold and unedible, the fettecini was bland, and the chicken marsala was decent but all very generic. All premade, frozen, and heated up by their "chefs".
I also got a combo plate in order to try a little bit of multiple items. The shrimp was OK but nothing special. The cheese ravioli was good, but again, straight out of a package. The fettacini with red sause was bland and actually had a bad aftertaste. It was not edible.
All in all, this place was a huge disapointment. I'm not sure how they are still open. The food is premade and all out of a jar, can, box, or package. (I think I've even bought the breadsticks at Costco before). Not only was the food generic it just flat out was not good. I can't comment on the salads as ours neve made it to our table; Not sure if the waiter forgot or if Price Chopper had just ran out of ceaser salad that evening.
- Pros: OK view of the Plaza
- Cons: Food
Early Bird Speical!!
by lfinn at Citysearch
I dont think they like to bring it up but they have a fabulous early bird special! Starting off with unlimeted bread and a fabulous saled, then your choice of 1 of 11 speicalty pastas and to top it all of a scoop refreshing gelato! look for the coupon.. its under $12 which if i remember right is only 1 doller more when you go later for one plate of pasta!

We tried Figlio Restaurant for the first time about 5 months ago and we were very pleased! Being I'm Italian and we are both from NY we miss the Italian food back home and found their food had the same great taste we miss. The service was great, the atmosphere pleasant and romantic and the prices were very reasonable. The amount of food was just right. The drinks at the bar, however, were kind of expensive. We would recommend Figlio Restaurant to anyone.
- Pros: Good food, Good service, Reasonably priced
- Cons: , Ok parking
This scenic spot serves a broad array of authentic Italian fare and "death by chocolate."

In Short
The beautiful panoramic view of the Country Club Plaza and its historic J.C. Nichols fountain creates lasting memories for special events. Menu favorites include antipasti, made-to-order platters and frittatas. Meals range from salmon-topped salads to fresh fettuccini Alfredo. Pizzas are brought straight from a wood-burning oven. For dessert, try the Morto nel Cioccolato, a chocolate-amaretto gelato-covered double-chocolate cake.
