Fly found in dim sum

by oneandonlyfoodie

I went to dim sum this past weekend, and was enjoying the dumplings actually....UNTIL....I found a dead fly in one of the dumpling containers!! I reported it first to our so-called waitress...who just said, "What do you want me to do about it?" Then, I told her to get the manager. The manager came to take a look and then she said, "they can't control for flying insects unlike crawling insects." She said she was sorry and offered to take off just that dumpling item. I was so disgusted that couldn't eat any more. The proper way to handle this is actually to offer a free meal, either that day or in the future, to ensure that customers come back. This type of thing happened to me a few times before and that is how the manager always responded. More importantly, I didn't feel like they cared. Oh, I also saw a big cockroch crawl on the wall another time I was there...THAT is a crawling insect!!

My advice is to look at what you're eating!

  • Pros: taste is decent
  • Cons: service, sanitation

Best Cinese food

by Rocky69

I have seen Jayzg giving only 1 star for this restaurant. It freaks me out. He would better enjoy his chinese food by buying some frozen stuff in a Walmart.

Dim Sum is great

by bcfol440

Went for Dim Sum and was really happy with the selections. Granted, it may be a bit tame for some folks used to Shanghai dim sum, but it was very tasty and fun to try the many offerings - some more exotic than others.

I'm not sure how the pricing works, but for three of us (very large eaters) our bill was about $70 with tea. So, not bad for a fun Sunday brunch/lunch. Next time, we will know what to order! We tried a lot of "new" things, so we spent more than normal.

  • Pros: Location (plaza), lots of seating, selection

Bland, Unforgetable, w/ no speak English Mexican (Illegals?)

by jayzq

I can see why there haven't been reviews of this restaurant since 2005 - and why I haven't been here since 1997. The place hasn't improved much and in fact has greatly deteriorated. 1) At dinner time service, NONE of the waiters knew anything about the menu, mostly 20 something white boys. 2) Servers and guys that poured water knew no English, so when we tried to ask them about getting another fork, no one could understand. 3) Food was BLAND and uninspired. I've had better Chinese food in a strip mall. Finally, leaving the Plaza branch, we noticed unusual wood furniture at the entrance - but guess what? Hostess w/ picanniny type hair style knew nothing about them which about sums up my review, avoid this place of nothing - no nothing - taste nothing and is nothing!!!

  • Pros: Located near the Plaza
  • Cons: Using cheap help which shows in food service, food preparation and atmosphere!

No other word can describe excellence!!!!!

by kelina49

Never in my life have I ever thought that I could find such a restaurant. After finding Bo Ling's I never wanted another chinese restaurant! The general tso chicken is my favorite. I have tried everything on the menu tradition and non. Nothing has every tasted so good. The orange peel shrimp, the ever so tender beef and broccoli, and that very tasty moo shu chicken. Try your splendor in mixing home made sauces. The dim sum is also excellent! The steamed pork buns and egg custard are a must. But for those wonderful dishes you have to get there early. Dim sum is only served on saturday and sunday from 11am-2:30pm and they are always crowded. But it is so worth the wait. I moved to cleveland over a year ago. But I always find my way back to Bo Lings for the excellent food, staff, and service!!!!!!

  • Pros: EVERYTHING!!!!

BEST CHINESE COMFORT FOOD

by nootzie

I have been a customer for many years, but I never tire of their great soups, chicken dishes and varieties of fried rice! When you need a great egg roll, look no further! I always bring friends to Bo Ling's because I can count on consistently excellent food and very friendly service, at the right price. Lots of restaurants in the city, so it's convenient, too. I give Bo Ling's my highest recommendation, it's a crowd pleaser and has the best carry-out in town.

  • Pros: Delicious, Variety, Fast

BEST CHINESE IN TOWN, BAR NONE

by larosty

Bo Lings is a great local restaurant, especially for those of us who love fresh food, vegetables, and lots of variety. The Ng family really strive to get the best meat, seafood and produce possible ... and it shows. Try the regional favorites, and not just Chinese ... lots of good Thai dishes on the menu, too! Great for families, staff loves kids and don't mind when they make a mess. Richard Ng makes fabulous wontons of all sorts, and best Crab Rangoon in US! Bo Lings was honored by Chinese Restaurant news as one of the Top 100 best Chinese restaurants in the country. We are lucky to have Bo Lings in this city, truly gourmet Chinese cuisine.

  • Pros: easy parking, best take-out, fast service

Moo shu pork or dim sum are highlights at this smoke-free Chinese restaurant.

by Contributor

The Scene
Chef Richard Ng and his wife Theresa so thoroughly enjoy sharing the cuisine of their homeland that they operate three of the most successful Chinese restaurants in the metro area. Both Johnson County locations are smoke-free.

The Food
Moo shu pork with plum sauce, crispy Szechuan green beans, sweet and spicy General Tso's chicken, and plump fresh scallops with veggies and light oyster sauce are among the most frequently ordered dishes. But don't overlook the Cantonese lettuce wraps, spicy Mongolian beef in hoisin sauce, and Singapore style noodles with curry. Each is superb. The Plaza and Metcalf locations offer extraordinary dim sum each Saturday and Sunday at lunchtime. The luscious little Chinese morsels--there are about 50 to choose from--are all reasonably priced, and an assortment makes a delightfully unique brunch for a group.

Dish to Die For
Orange peel shrimp.

10 out of 10

by bdoff

I can't believe Bo Lings hasn't been written up 'til now. It is I think the best Chinese restaurant in the country. I've visited 32 of the 50 states and have been searching for the perfect Chinese cuisine for 8 years. I've lived in Boston, Washington D.C. and Chicago, and to date no Chinese restaurant in this country has surpassed the excellence of the food and the friendlyness of the staff here. Anyone who lives in KCMO should be ashamed of themselves for not supporting this great find!

  • Pros: best food, take out, parking
  • Cons: none
