WORST SERVICE EVER - DOES NOT EVEN DESERVE A STAR

by kmract

Dinner here was to begin a fun and special evening. All the people involved in the service, from waitress to fake management, should be ashamed of how bad the experience at Kabuki was. First waited over 45 min to get drinks, then orders were wrong, did not get appetizers and staff was EXTREMELY RUDE!!! We would have walked out on bill but all that would have accomplished was us getting arrested...Sad when you have no recourse for being treated so badly...Spend your money where your patronage is appreciated...

  • Pros: NONE
  • Cons: RUDE STAFF - HORRIBLE SERVICE - LONG WAIT

TERRIBLE SERVICE

by AMG0822

We went for a special night out with the girls and left angry and upset!!! They ruined a good portion of the night for us! It took FORTY FIVE minutes just to get drinks!!! They forget to bring out soups and salads to certain individuals, although we asked and reminded them numerous times, we still did not get them! They did not bring the appetizer we order and the hot food took longer than the cold! We tried to be patient and polite but that can only go so far when they are rude when you ask for a drink or refill of water! I would never recommend this place to anyone. In fact, you couldn't pay me $100 to go back!!!!!!

worst place ever!

by Summer3

I went in for dinner at a Friday night with friends. We waited one hour to get our food. When I asked about our orders, the server said she could check for us, but everybody here was before us. That was not a nice response that could be, especially after having us waiting for 50 minutes already The food was no good either. We didn't get served once during our 2 hours there, no water refilled. I was really unhappy with their service, so I decided no tips. But later on I found out that my credit card was overcharged: they added 28% tips on their own. The manager said she didn't have any copy of my receipt when I called, and asked me to come down there with my receipt copy. That was the worst dining experience I've ever had. Really ridiculous! But I was not the only one who was screwed up that night. A group of 9 or more waited even longer than us, and they left mad without getting any food. Seriously, stay away from this place!!!

  • Pros: no
  • Cons: slow, horrible services, overcharge your credit card

Be sure to ask for the UNI!

Growing up in Kansas City, as a high school freshman, I began my first stint of gainful employment in 1985 (part-time) as a dishwasher for Jun's (then on 103rd & State Line). I was then first introduced to a delicacy known as sushi (unheard of in my peer circles at THAT time) and started my education in Asian cuisine. Arigato, Junsan for those heaping bowls of sushi we'd get from the overstock on Sunday nights.

Since the mid-80's, I've certainly taken in my fair share of sashimi and maki, and aside from Nara (for you regular rollers, Koji and Fumi are like no other - 'you know what I mean') - the sushi chef's (and wait staff) at Kabuki are the friendliest bunch that you'll ever come across.

The atmosphere is what you'd expect in a casual yet classy sort of way. Kabuki's prices match their decor, reasonable and the consistent. YOU SEE WHAT YOU'RE GETTING on the menu. Speaking of which, for you 'out-of-towners', if the menu or service should not meet your 'demands' - then feel free to ask for the boss, Ted-san (who's ALWAYS there) to make your current and next visit a pleasure. Shame on those for applying New York standards to my Kansas City budget and PASSION for that which is sushi.

  • Pros: Always a seat at the sushi bar (for one)
  • Cons: Lighting was a little dim to see the menu

Stay away. Far away.

I spent several years of my life living in Tokyo, so I know a few things about sushi. There are a lot of sushi places in the US that actually serve up a good roll, but Kabuki just isn't one of them.

I ordered the "Sashimi and Sushi Dinner." First up was, oddly enough, a very generic American-style salad with Thousand Island dressing. Next was miso soup which was VERY bland - the restaurant had made no effort to disguise the fact that it is from the cheapest of cheapest powdered mixes. It was served lukewarm. I ordered one each of Kirin and Asahi beers - they apparently had only one size which stands in stark contrast to many other sushi places where you can get larger-size bottles.

When the food arrived, it was immediately apparent that the sushi chef had little/no experience or dedication. Each roll was a thinly sliced speck of fish atop a wobbly sphere of rice. No effort had been put towards enhancing the presentation at all. Meanwhile, in all seriousness, the annoying Muzak in the restaurant blared out the theme to The Pink Panther.

As mentioned in another review, all restaurant staff remained at the bar watching TV the whole time we were there. The only time the waitress paid attention to us was the one time she appeared to be headed to the bathroom in the back of the restaurant while taking a break from watching TV.

Really, this place is overall pathetic. Judging by how uncrowded it was during peak dinner hours, it seems that most other locals have figured this out already.

Will eat there again.

by Doose

I have just moved to KC from NYC, love sushi and ate it all the time in NYC. I have dined at some of the upper market places in NYC such as Nobu, Kai and Gheisa, adn whilst Kabuki is not in this class, my first experience was up there with a reasonable mid-range Japanese restaurant. We ate on a Monday night, slow night. But there was about 1/3 full, and one regular sat next to me and seemed to know the sushi game and the sushi bar chef was straight with him when asked what was good and fresh and was just ok. We will go back there and look fwd to takeaway. Maybe they read some of the reviews and addressed the service issues - but I will not know that for sure until a more busier night.

Good luck.

Worst sushi in Kansas City

by prgnhg01

As a sushi lover, any other sushi restaurant in Kansas City is better than Kabuki. Kabuki is often less than clean. Kabuki has terrible service. Kabuki sometimes uses mayonaise on their rolls. Yich.

Hikari is inconsistent. Sushi House is overpriced, but the environmnet is the best. Juns is reliable, but service can be lacking. Siki is the best overall.

Horrible service!

by patlawatty

The service is absolutely horrific. I took clients to this place for lunch and after ordering, we waited 1 hour before we were served. Last night, I went back and had to search for the waitress at least three times because we were out of drinks, forgot apps, etc. I'm fairly forgiving if the restaurant is full, but each time, she was at the bar watching tv.....

I won't be back.

  • Pros: good location
  • Cons: service is horrible

Could be better

by naboo

After having arrived here in KC, I was so glad to find a sushi place so near, as I am a real sushi-lover. I was a little astonished to find fried calamares on the menue wich is definitely not a typical japanese dish. The rolls were good, with some unusual ingredients - which is nice. Service could be more friendly.

  • Pros: Nice rolls
  • Cons: Service
