The Scene

KU-related in name only, there's usually a regular or two eons beyond college-age at the Formica counter, scarfing down a home-style meal. Dining tables are of similar vintage, clashing with the well-worn carpet. If you're late to meet a friend, all phone calls for customers, and employees for that matter, must be directed to the pay phone. The only jayhawk to be found in the joint appears on a clock hung above the soda fountain.

The Food

Sandwiches are piled high with five ounces of deli meat and all the fixings. The chicken-fried-steak is as large as the plate it's brought on. Breakfast platters, served all day, arrive with hash browns and most dinners are served with vegetables and a choice of potato. That doesn't mean diners will have room for those sides, however, much less a slice of apple pie afterwards.
