Top 3 BBQ Joint in KC
by leadoff55 at Citysearch
Oklahoma Joe's is a great place to experience the world famous KC BBQ. Located in a gas station on Kansas City's westside I was shocked how great the food was upon my first visit. Since then I have become a frequent visitor of this food establishment. I strongly recommend the Z-man sandwich for any first time visitor and the french fries are addicitive. The atmosphere is different. If you visit during the lunch hour it will normally is very busy, and you may have to wait for 15 plus minutes. Also seating can be difficult to find. If you happen to visit OK Joe's with a group I would suggest having one person in your party reserving a table while the rest of the group orders lunch.
The food is very reasonable priced and it is to die for. But be forewarned that if you visit other BBQ establishments OKlahoma Joe's sets the bar very high. Once you get a taste of OK Joe's it may be difficult for you to visit other BBQ restaurants in the future. I hope you enjoy it as well as my family and I do.
- Pros: Great KC BBQ and a reasonable price
- Cons: Located in a gas station

I travel to KC area 4-5 weeks a year, hands down Oklahoma Joe's has the best bbq in town. you must get the fries and use the bbq sauce on them.

K C folks know all about Oklahoma Joe's and if you are traveling through Kansas City I say stop here for some fantasic bbq. The beans are unique being a blend of different kinds of beans, one of them being a black bean. Beans are smokey and to me are some of the best. As of November 2008, a jumbo pulled pork sandwich on white or wheat bread or a bun was 6.49 and a side of beans 2.09 or cup 3.19. The rib dinners with one side and texas toast 12.29. Now with bbq deliciously seasoned and perfectly smoked, I have to recommened this as a must go to.
Just Okay

It was Okay..The ribs was like baked ham,I like pork ribs just not cooked like that. The menu didn't have a lot of choice and the beans had no flavor.
- Pros: Parking
- Cons: food boring
BEST BBQ ON EARTH!
by runaroundrachel at Citysearch
I swear, I used to be a true blue Arthur Bryant's fan... I just ate here... and let me tell you, IT IS THE BEST! The sauce is life changing. Its cheaper than every other bbq place in KC- The chicken is so juicy that its dripping. My husband got the bbq brisket sandwich with the onion ring on top and he loved it! The fries are to die for b/c they're seasoned with their bbq rub! This place is so delicious. Its worth the wait.
- Pros: The half chicken, the turkey, the brisket, the ribs, the sausage... the FRIES :)
- Cons: the line is long, sometimes it takes 30 mins
Stopped by for lunch.
by vberg3 at Citysearch
I stopped by there for lunch the other day and just wanted a BBQ sandwich. Pork and ham. I had not had their BBQ and wanted to see if it really was as good as everyone says. I ended up ordering their Jumbo as a to go order. When I got back to my office I was a bit upset. It had about as much meat on it as you would get from an Arbys $1.11 sandwich. $9 for THAT little thing? If you are looking for a value then try RJ's or Johnny's because this place is just trying to make money off its so called reputation.
- Pros: None
- Cons: Small portions
Out of towner found the best BBQ here
by WSeattleFoodie at Citysearch
Being from the Seattle area, we have a few good BBQ places here. During a business trip recently, I was staying in the Crown Plaza area and researched BBQ here. Seeing the rep of this place, as well as one of my flavorite wise cracking chefs, Anthony Bordain, coming here and declaring this as the best BBQ ever, I decided to put my trust in the man and give it a try. Spending over $30 in cab fare to go and come back to this place from the hotel, it better be worth it. Well.... I was NOT dissapointed. I order their slab of ribs, a small pulled pork sandwich, cole slaw and potatoe salad. It was all heaven. The ribs, without dipping the accompanied sauce, was rich with flavor and smoke. The seasoning was incredible. The sauce simply added more to this heavenly delight. The pulled pork was very very good as well. The sides were very good. I'm still in search of the perfect potatoe salad, but this place did it well. Coleslaw was also just right.
While this was my first time in K.C. and is not a place I normally travel near, you can be sure that this will be a mandatory stop next time I'm in town.
- Pros: The best BBQ
- Cons: In a converted gas station. Take it to go.
Some of the best pulled pork I've ever had and onion rings like you've never had
by jayhawk98 at Citysearch
Tried Oklahoma Joe's on the recommendation of our landlord and some co-workers, we were not disappointed. Went with a group of very hungry people this last Saturday afternoon (the evening of the KU/MU football game). When we arrived at the Shamrock gas station (where it's located) we were greeted by a huge line of people almost to the door - a very good sign. Even though the line was long it moved quickly, but not so quickly that we weren't able to stare and drool as we passed patrons attempting to eat their sandwiches, ribs, cole slaw and onion rings(oh the onion rings). By the time we reached the counter to order we'd all decided that, in addition to barbeque, we needed to try those onion rings. My wife and I ordered the pulled pork sandwich (a house specialty), the beef brisket sandwich, the spicey cole slaw and, of course, the onion rings. Everything was amazing ... the meat was tender and juicy, the slaw was very tasty and the onion rings were some of the best I've had in my life. Then there's the sauce, advertised by Oklahoma Joe's as the "Best Sauce on the Planet" and I don't think they're far off. The sauce is spicey with just enough sweetness, delicious on everything. Next time, very soon, we'll give the ribs a try because they looked as good as everything I had tasted.
- Pros: Awesome food and fast service.
- Cons: It's in a gas station so don't expect too much ambience & seating is limited.
Great BBQ!

The pulled pork sandwiches are fantastic. The pork is tender and the buns are very soft. Don't forget to add some bbq sauce... it's some of the best I've tasted. As far as sides, the fries, onion rings, and cole slaw are all very tasty. The potato salad is heavy on mayonaise, so if you aren't a fan of mayo, skip the potato salad. The baked beans are good as well, although a tad spicy.
Be prepared for long lines... This no frills restaurant is very popular... and worth the wait!
- Pros: Great, affordable food
- Cons: Long lines, limited parking
What's the deal about this place
by kswalker at Citysearch
KC has great BBQ - this place was "okay" according to KC standards. Pork was dry... bread was dry... I've had better beans. Ambiance was okay.
- Pros: BBQ
- Cons: Not great BBQ
One of the best in KC
by crownskid at Citysearch
Good meat, great sauce, and too many fries. I have yet to order anything off of the menu and been disappointed (and I've been then more than a couple of times). In my opinion the sauce is what seperates the good from the great and this place has got it figured out!!! If you go for lunch, get there early or expect to wait. Seating is sparce, but it seems like there is always something available. Don't let the location scare you away, people think I'm crazy when I say KC's best BBQ shares it's location with a gas station, but it's true. Be sure to check out the lunch special and save a couple of bucks.
- Pros: sauce
- Cons: long lines at lunch
