Phenominal, Wonderful, Outstanding Everything.

by soccermomma9421 at Citysearch

I've been going to China Star for years. Yes you might have one bad experience (i've only had one and it wasn't a big deal) but I still go back. Why? The food is wonderful, the service is wonderful. The food has quality. It's never been frozen. Everything is literally fresh. Go during a busy hour though. You honestly can't expect a buffet to have fresh food a 8:45pm if they close around 9:30. Especially if there's only 3 tables in the entire place. BUT IF ITS NOT FRESH, ask your waitress to bring what you want out fresh. You don't just have to sit around waiting...it really is a good restaraunt. No doubt about it.

Best Chinese.

by njatw13132 at Citysearch

I live in Mission Hills, KS. I have absolutely no problem spending $100 dollars on a meal. (I'm not saying this to brag) but I've been to a lot of Chinese and Japanese and even Korean places before and I have to say this is the best Chinese food I've ever been to. It's easy to get to, the food is fresh (if you go at a normal time. 6-730pm for dinner) and the service is good. You only pay $9.22 including tax and you have 48main entree dishes to choose from not including the wonderful ice cream, desert bar and salad/fruit bar. I've been going to both China Stars for years and I have to say I love the one is Overland Park more than I love the one in Olathe. This is a family run business and if you go there often and get to know everyone, you can being to feel as if you are family. Don't kid yourself and go to some cheap Chinese place just to save a little extra cash (my kids do that) just spend an extra $5 and get a lot more out of your meal.

Awesome Buffet

by charper140 at Citysearch

Parking is great, hardly any waiting, buffet is always full and fresh. If you'd like a different version of anything that is on the buffet they will make it for you. We've been going for years and have yet to be disappointed.

  • Pros: Nice staff, Lots of good food
  • Cons: Can't think of any...

Limited food choices and very bad manager

by Pinlun at Citysearch

We went to this restaurant in a large group of 30+ people. We called to reserve the table one day ahead of time. When we arrived and was about to pick food from the buffet table, we felt there wasn't many choices and wasn't much food left in each food container. In fact, there were quite a few empty dishes. When finally some very small shrimps were brought in, they were just too few of them that not even the bottom of the container was covered. Only two of us were lucky enough to get a few pieces and there was no more. In fact , the small shrimps were the only sea-food for that evening. Many of us were waiting for some re-fills of the empty food containers but it didn't happen. Anyway, none of us was happy about the dinner experience in that restaurant.

What was worse is when we called to speak to the manager about the dinner experience the second day, she was instantly mad about our complaint and refused to listen. She didn't tell us who she was and what her name was and she was talking in an very rude way and hung up in the middle of our conversation. She is the rudest manager we've ever talked to!! With her in charge, it's not hard to imagine what eaters could experience in that restaurant!

Please be advised not to eat in China Star Super Buffet if you could help it, or you'll feel extremely disappointed!!

  • Pros: lots of empty seating space
  • Cons: food not worth the price

uh oh...

This was yet another dissatisfying chinese buffett. During a busy dinner rush, multiple items were left empty along with our water glasses. The biggest burst of flavor on my plate was the leftover soy sauce I had to drench the food with. Lo mein is typically a staple of American Chinese food... the China Star proves this assumption incorrect. If you're coming to eat never-ending crab rangoon, this is your place as this was the only bright spot on the buffett.

Used to be my favorite chinese buffet, not anymore......

by djpintsize at Citysearch

I have gone to this restaurant since it opened. I had a somewhat identical experience as the 1st review. The food used to always be fresh and plentiful. The time before last, they were low on a lot of stuff, when I asked if more was coming out, they brought more food out in a timely manner. When I went last night at 8:15, they close at 9:30, everything on the entree side of the buffet was old, crusty and half empty with no meat, just veggies that were wilted and disgusting looking. When I asked if more stuff was coming out the server told me that it was too close to closing time and that they might be out of shrimp but she would check and see if they would make more. I sat and waited for about 20 minutes, snacking on appetizers (since that was the only thing on the buffet that looked edible) for the server to let me know if more food was coming out. She came back and told me that when she asked, they just said "ok" and she did not know if they were making more or not so I waited about another 10 minutes and when no food came out I went to talk to the person I was told was manager. When I spoke with him at not even 9PM he told me it was too close to closing time to make any more food. When I told him we arrived an hour and a half before they closed and asked for food refills he just started talking to the server in chinese and she told me that they would not charge me. That did not solve the probem. They still charged my mother and my friend $10 a piece for crusty, dried up, old, nasty food that was not worth 50 cents. They probably had a major case of the mud butts from eating it anyway after sitting under food lamps for so long. I will never eat at this place again even though it used to be my favorite chinese restaurant in town, my business is now going to Dragon Inn in Corinth Square. I don't know if they are under new ownership/management, but this place really stinks now. DONT GO TO THIS PLACE UNLESS YOU HAVE NO TASTEBUDS AND WANT DIAREAHA AND STOMACH PAINS!!

  • Pros: I guess if you go early enough, they might have decent food but not sure.
  • Cons: Horrible customer service. Old, crusty, dried up, unpleasant looking food on buffet.

Good eating experience now gone bad.

by Palace01 at Citysearch

The evening about 7:30pm on 6-3-08 I went to what was my favorite place to eat which I have gone to for years. On family special events we would dine out here. This visit I brought a friend and recommended the place. What I like was their shrimp among other things. There was a small amount of shrimp left in the serving area and I took it in stride. I had then asked the employee overseeing the buffet if there was more shrimp on the way and he told me to eat the other choices. Bewildered, I asked our waitress if they were making more shrimp servings and she said she would check on it. The waitress then went to the male employee at the buffet area and asked him about my request and I seen him do a horizontal waving motion with his hand and shaking his head "no" as they looked in my direction. The waitress then came back to us and said they were still making it. I got a little disturbed because I had seen his motioning. A short time had passed and the serving area was still not refilled with my favorites. I asked the waitress again if there is more shrimp coming out and again she said they were making it.

I then asked for the owner and manager and the waitress said they were not there. I asked again and she said no one was in charge. A restaurant with no management on the premises, that was weird. Service went downhill from there. About a half hour later I again asked if the shrimp was ready and she replied they did not have any. My favorite place to eat was becoming a bad experience. They were not refilling the favorite dishes I liked and returned for these past years and were very uncooperative when asking for management. I was just puzzled because of the years I had come here and now things seemed to have changed. I sat there apologizing to a friend who was there for the first time and made up my mind to not recommend this place again.

With this tarnished memory I will no longer recommend it to anyone I know.

  • Pros: Plenty of parking.
  • Cons: If you can settle with what is available then it's ok.

A solid Chinese buffet

by duff80 at Citysearch

We've eaten here a lot. It's a large buffet with great service, plenty of room, and good food. However, while they certainle feature the staples you would expect at a Chinese buffet, they don't really offer much out of the ordinary and don't have any non-Asian food?disappointing for me, since I often get pulled there when I'm not really in the mood for Chinese food. The dinner buffets are a little pricey, in my opinion, unless you bring a monster appetite. The atmosphere isn't much to speak of, though I do like the big windows facing the corporate pond across Metcalf. Overall, a very stable Chinese buffet that probably won't disappoint, but won't impress either.

  • Pros: Bins are kept fresh and service is quick and friendly. Soft serve ice cream machine. Prompt seating.
  • Cons: Unimaginative food selection. Not much ambiance. A little pricey.
