don't waste your money. We purchased a floor model mattress at an outstanding price. We were extremely excited about the value and the customer service of our salesman, Jose. We made the purchase late on a Sunday and were unable to pick it up until the following Saturday. Jose was great and told us he would have the matress removed from the store floor, wrapped in plastic, and set aside in the warehouse so that other customers would not be on it. Saturday arrived and we picked up the mattress which was wrapped in plastic as promised. We brought it home and immediately after opening it, I smelled an extremely strong cigarette smoke odor. It was a hassle for us to pick up the mattress as it is far away. So, I decided to try to get rid of the odor without trying to return, etc. I used a professional grade steamer and steamed the entire mattress twice. I then let it dry as we ran errands, etc. 6 hours later, our entire upstairs smelled like cigarette smoke (no one has ever smoked in this house). So, I used an entire bottle of antibacterial febreze on the mattress. I saturated the top, sides, and bottom. I then opened the windows, set the mattress in the sun, and turned a fan on. 8 hours later the smell seemed to have subsided. We put clean sheets and mattress pad on and slept on it. The next morning, our hair, clothes, and skin reeked of smoke. I contacted Gaines. The initial woman I spoke to was extremely rude, told me that it was impossible for my mattress to smell like cigarettes. I started to protest when she angrily said, "just a minute" and transferred me without warning. The next man I spoke to listened to my story then proceeded to tell me that he wanted to help me but I had to "take some responsibility for the problem." I immediately was miffed at that comment and exclaimed my disbelief at how rude he was being. He rose his voice and told me I was being rude for arguing with him. He then went on a 3 minute rant about how he was going to help me because he's so understanding even though it's my problem that the mattress stinks and is in no way Gaines' fault or responsibility. When he was done speaking I exclaimed that it was most definitely their fault as no one in my home smokes. He interrupted me and said he could not possibly help me if I wasn't going to be quiet and let him talk.... What?!!!! He just gave a 3 minute speech but I didn't let him talk? Needless to say, I expressed again how he should be apologizing to ME, the paying customer, but if he was going to be rude I would go straight to the BBB. He then said, "if that's how you want to handle it, then fine, do it!" and then hung up on me. So, I just finished my report with the BBB and I will do my best to continue to spread the word to everyone in the KC metro area that Gaines is unsanitary, unfriendly, and you should not waste your money with them. They should have promptly apologized, offered to send out a delivery truck with replacement, and taken the stinky one out.
Best of the best. I like the service and the helpfulness of the employees.
Satisfactory. I really appreciated your business.
Very Helpful. Mike was very helpful in helping me find the perfect mattress for my bad back and legs. He was great.
Great Selection. Has a great selection of furniture to choose from.
Found a couch I love!. Very helpful, found a couch I love! Thanks!
Great!. I had a good shopping day at Gaines.
Gaines furniture a NebraskaFM alternative for KC.
I am an educated deal finder.
Ok first I have to address two things.
The bad reviews about delivery damage problems, you get that anywhere people, unless your paying a high premium in the very high price custom furniture places. My advice get friends to help, dont have a truck? home improvement places rent you a large bed pickup for $19. cheaper than delivery anyway.
2nd thing yes its in a bad neighborhood, again people where can you rent an ENTIRE BUILDING in KCMO and sell furniture at a good price?? Truman RD is a lot better than Prospect
I have to compare this place to NFM because as much as i can sometimes hate the place they have a ton of selection, sales and clearance items all the time, the place is always packed for a reason but larger doesnt always mean better, that is how monopolies start. Price and quality looks on par with the better items at NFM which is a good thing.
After reading reviews I at least wanted to check this place out after being burned on a large TV stand at NFM. Their selection is obviously less due to size but i did notice since they have less space they fill it with higher quality pieces. I was looking for solid wood over 60inch tv stands, NFM had 8-10 only liked 2, Gaines had 3 and liked 2. So again not as much selection but good pieces. The sales man was nice, not pushy, the one I wanted was already marked clearance and last one they had, it did have some small marks on top that he said would come off with pledge (i knew they wouldn't come off so I asked him to see if they could) after pledge didnt work I asked if they could come down in price since it wasn't being sold scratch+dent, my TV was going to cover it anyway but doesn't hurt to ask. He said he cant and doesnt think so but would get the boss. Very nice lady came out with Old English in hand (again knew it wasnt gonna work but I let them try) after that failed she knocked it off another 15% below clearance which I was happy with. She gave advice on care of the wood and even got on her hands and knees to clean the dust out. So i got what I wanted which is better than my recent NFM experience.
I'm not in the need of financing but they seemed to have a lot of options if you need it, I always feel you can get a better deal paying all at once.
They have some hideous rugs on the wall right when you enter, like big lion faces, not my taste, dont let that scare you off and you have to give your fingerprint on the receipt which i thought was a little silly but I'm sure they have to take precautions against scammers.
Overall I'd say I recommend this as an alternative for the other big place... a NFM Lite if you will. I'd defiantly go back.
higher quality and lower priced than anywhere else. All of the merchandise was higher quality and lower priced than anywhere else I looked in the Kansas City Area.
you can find some really great stuff for awesome prices. Its an outlet store...not a JCPennys: I bought a living room set that consisted of a couch, loveseat, two end tables, a living room table, and a spider lamp, all for around $1200. My couch and loveseat are verry confortable. I've had them for about 6 years now and they are still in good condition. I'm sure places like this will sell you a lemon if you aren't a smart shopper but thats with anywhere. You have to really look for certain things that may affect the life of your furniture. I rented a couch from a rent place before. The couch had a gold strip running down the arms. within the first 6 mo. the gold on the strip starting peeling off. If you get a couch that's too stiff, its probably going to end up all lumpy and or flat in no time. This is a discount outlet not a high quality store. Think of it like a thrift store...you can find some really great stuff for awesome prices. You just have to shop carefully. And yes, you might have to deal with things being on back order and people giving you the "brush off", but what do you want for a bargain price. In a perfect world we would all get exactly what we want.
