Fun and friendly.
Some of the other reviewers have complained about the "acoustics" (a misnomer, as they are usually talking about hearing a sound system). But over the last year, Knuckleheads has dramatically revised their sound system, installing new sound boards, amps and speakers. In the last month, they've replaced the roof over the main interior stage, and will be building a new stage soon.
It's actually a complex: There is a main interior stage that can hold several hundred people, a back room that can hold a few dozen (and often different acts playing in both places) and an exterior stage during the summer ( they rotate the sound board to face the interior or exterior stage). The outside concerts are the most fun - there is a boxcar that serves as a seating area.
Great Bands, Cool Atmosphere. The bands we have seen have been wonderful...unfortunately, the acoustics of the place are horrible. Just good enough to realize the talent but bad enough to make you regret the $12.25-$25.00 cover. Will give it another try and probably go back many times because it's one the coolest and unique places in K.C.
Stooge Jam?. Here's another place where the session hosts use the venue as a showcase for their family and friends. I waited an hour despite being second on the signup sheet, finally walking out after two pints at $3 apiece. Food's OK (they have Italian available) and there's plenty of Boulevard on tap. It's family friendly despite the bikers, but if you're planning to play, take your money and efforts elsewhere.
Blues and Beer, this is the spot.
Best little dive in KC, if you can find it! Go to the city market, drive east, follow the yellow signs.
We don't go there to eat, but we do enjoy a cold beer, great music and decent folks.
No snobs, no blender, so don't order a pina colada, but the beer is always cold and the margaritas in the plastic cups are so very refreshing when it's hot outside.
Great patio in good weather, cozy little dive full of hot blues when its cold outside, compliments to the owner, great job.
OT OF THE WAY BUT WORTH IT.
Basically under a viaduct just east of Isle of Capri, hard to get to, but NO PAIN NO GAIN. I have found generally bands are worth cover charge. Blues, Rockabilly, and the like. You know: workin' man's music. Refreshingly devoid of jazz and the rich people that listen to it. Cheap beer and drinks but bring green stuff cause its cash only. Also Crush and IBC in the glass bottle. Limited food menu that's reasonably priced.
I can't say enough about this place, so go see for yourself.
