I guess one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch – I gave a one-star review review based on my service today and not the overall service i have received. I have been to this location many times and have never had bad service or even bad food...until today. Myself and four other friends went there for a co-worker's birthday dinner. We got there at 5pm and were seated immediately with no problems. Drink orders were taken and everything was fine. The last person in our group arrived about 10 minutes later. Her drink order was taken and when it was dropped off, the waitress said she would be right back to take our orders. So 5 minutes pass. Then 10 minutes and then 15. Meanwhile, our waitress is helping other tables and even taking orders for people that came in after us. Needless to say, by this time I was P!$$@%. We were finally able to flag her down and give our orders. One of us ordered the crab cake appetizer and actually asked to have it BEFORE the entrees arrive. So while waiting for the food to come, we snack on the complimentary bread and butter (which, i must admit, is awesome!). After awhile we start to notice tables that ordered AFTER us are getting their food. I guess i should have mentioned that when we ordered our food we also ordered more bread and butter. About 15 minutes later i flagged down the waitress again and asked yet again for the bread and butter. Then 5 minutes later the appetizer arrives. And what do you know, two minutes later our entrees arrive! And THEN the extra bread and butter! I got the Beer Battered Onion Rings and i must say, they were discusting. You could clearly see seasoning in the batter but there was absolutely no flavor to them at all. I would like to say I'll be back but who knows. I really do think that did it for me. I love the Chicken Fettucine Alfredo so if i do give my money to this company, I think I'll go to the Legends location. It doesn't have the same feel as the original but the food is still good.
Excellent Place – Went on a Friday night was seated immediately. Live band was gritty and sounded like it was straight out of New Orleans. I had the coonass chicken. I ordered the half order (half assed) which was a very large portion. The food was amazing. Other people at my table had the crab cakes and the po boy which they all enjoyed. Would suggest it to everyone!
a fun 'joint' – We love to go to 'joints' stay away from chains when traveling.
what a treat this was! lots of New Orleans junk on the walls, a very casual atmosphere. Band was a little loud, but we did not go there to discuss world issues, just soak it in!
Gumbo was a good starter, we were there on a Tuesday, the Chicken ala mer was a 1/2 price special.
chicken with a seafood 'gravy' on top. had a choice of preparation, fried, grilled or blackened. I had the blackened, a great choice to make it spicey!
My husband had some seafood pasta, really liked it but thought it had too much sauce [but that's a common issue he has]

Take it from a native. This place is horrible – Take it from a fellow born and raised Cajun near the Atchafalaya river basin, this place is a huge letdown. There is one single item you measure "Louisiana Style" resturants by, and that's the Gumbo. Gumbo is supposed to have a neutral to mid-dark roux. apparantly the chef at Jazz likes burnt roux, which in essence, ruins the entire dish. Not to mention, it appeared as if the rice in my dish was added long before it was to be served to me. Thus, I was served more of a Gumbalaya dish rather than an authentic Gumbo. This idish is highly insulting for anyone who knows true gumbo, whether creole or filet.
I was also forced to return for a company arrangement and ordered the Po Boy. Everyone knows your typical Po Boy should be smalled with so much shrimp, you can make antoher sandwich with the leftovers. Not so with Jazz's Po Boy. It's more of a "shrimp sandwich" than anything else. Highly frustrating affair.
Hoenstly, the only louisiana kitchen that was worth the visit in the KC area was La Croix Creole Bistro out in westport however (Rumor has it) the owner was shipped out to Iraq for the war and they had to close up shop.
For decent Louisiana food, you might be better served at Boudreaux out near Overland Park. Otherwise, stay away from the disgrace and insult that is Jazz.
small food amounts – I went there and it was a huge let down. The music is way too loud and the food is not that good. I got a po boy and it was just not very good plus portion was small.
Keep Going! – I took a chance by bringing three of my (non-risk-taking) co-workers from a job we had in Kansas City because of the reviews here. It's only a short drive out of downtown, but you go through a very sketchy neighborhood to get there... DON'T TURN AROUND! It really is as good as they say. It appears to be a hole in the wall, but once you enter in from around back it's a very comfortable environment that makes you feel as if you stepped into another city. I gave it 5 stars not because New Orleans style cooking is my favorite, but because it was very well made in a great authentic style. The sausage dishes were tasty, as was the jambalaya. I personally had the cajun pasta which was very flavorful and pretty spicy. All the dishes are drowning in the sauces (in a good way). They had a good selection of dishes and beers, I'd recommend them to anyone! I would not recommend the gator bites, however, too chewy.
I was also not there during jazz-night, but it appears as though it would be fitting and fun. I didn't see it as any place inappropriate for kids the night I went (sunday)
Great food, great music, great staff! Stuffed shirts should eat next door where they have valet parking.... – Don't know why you'd say it wasn't good for kids. Yes, they serve liquor, sometimes the song lyrics are somewhat 'mature,' but they don't mind a little noise or mess, they have 'finger foods' the kids can enjoy and you should be feeding the kids and getting them home to get ready for bed before happy hour is over anyway.
That said, no, it ain't Micky D's. Thank God!
What a place! – It may look like a 'dive', but it is amazing! That is the charm of this place! I wouldn't have it any other way!
Blackened Filet Mignon is to die for! CATFISH NUGGETS! OHHHHH! Bermuda Triangle is THE best drink! Blueberry Begnia's(sorry!)are so good!
Live entertainment at only 50c per item added in lieu of cover charge is A STEAL! Lonesome Hank is a great band! We bought their CD!
VERRRY reasonable & we feel so comfortable there! Some places-my husband & I feel out of place & here, we feel right at home! Great crowd & the bartenders are THE BEST!
By the way, they don't accept reservations.
Ask about the heat! – Great music (live blues), cold beer (all kinds), and cajun goodies (crawfish)!
Ask about the heat-level of each dish before you order. I love hot & spicy food, but the crawfish étouffée can be so extremely hot that you can't even see! (just add rice :)

Jazz is thick with Mardi Gras souvenirs and postcards. The atmosphere is gritty and festive (countless customers have scrawled their names on the walls), and you can fill up on great Big Easy grub. The jambalaya and gumbo are perfectly spicy; the shrimp comes by the pound, oysters by the dozen. You can eat your etoufee to the sounds of Kansas City's jazz and blues.
