Won't go there again--ever!. This Bistro was highly recommended by a friend who had, apparently, not been there in some time. The place is filthly, the food was not even close to hot and terrible besides. I ordered something with rice and veges and green curry sauce--no flavor at all--and totally overpriced. The bread was so dry I figured they had left it on the counter to dry out for the birds! With so many wonderful places to eat in KC I won't miss this place at all.

Very disappointing. I've been to Blue Bird 5 times in the past, always liked the food. Organized a lady's luncheon and could not have been more disappointed. Our food totally lacked flavor and was served lukewarm. The bread was so dry it must have been a week old. Since we were all so disappointed in our entrees, we thought dessert must be good. Not. The $11 chocolate pate had a sauce over it that burned your mouth - not hot, just crazy spices. On the bright side, our server was nice and friendly.

Makes me consider moving to Kansas City!. After living in Brooklyn for the past 6 years and being so in love with all the neighborhood quaint, relaxed and cozy eateries, it was very difficult for me to adjust to midwest living (I live in Tulsa, OK) with the favorites on their restaurant list being variations of chains. But someone tipped me onto Kansas City's vibe and somehow we stumbled into Blue Bird Bistro. And the heavens parted! There is life in the midwest! Pretentious? Not in the least! Down-to-earth, very relaxed, mellow atmosphere. The prices were similar in price to Brooklyn, which I agree is probably unwarranted. And some of the food we tried (we ate there twice) wasn't spectacular...e.g. the quesadillas, dry, very little cheese holding the beans, very disappointing. The Blue Bird salad with the house blueberry vinaigrette -- fabulous! Had it twice. Tofu fries, interesting and fun. Chili with cornbread - yum. I highly recommend this place. I would suggest, to the owner, however...if you are going to charge New York City prices (without the cost in rent to substantiate), give your customers a little something extra just to warm the cockles of their little pocketbooks.

Good sometimes; mediocre others. I've eaten here several times and have had hit-or-miss experiences. Some of the food is outstanding, and some is just so-so. The server we had last time was nice enough, bohemian and funky, but she spoke to us in a sing-songy voice like we were babies. Then she would turn and talk to a coworker in a normal voice. It was odd. We were seated last time at a deuce that was next to a set of shelves adjacent to the door to the upstairs where there was a special tasting going on and we were constantly brushed against by servers rushing about as well as customers coming and going. We moved our table so we would feel more comfortable, but it was still annoying. Neither of us remembers what entrees we had because they were that unmemorable, but we both remember the hummus being delicious. Unfortunately we both had unfortunate intestinal experiences the next day. I've eaten there before and been impressed by the pizza, and I'll give them another chance but I can make organic and healthy food at home that rivals what I've eaten there.

Disappointed- pretentious atmosphere, food was not worth the cost. My husband and I went to brunch on a Saturday. I was so exited because I usually love going to a place like this. My husband is a total "meat and potatoes" man, so it's usually a real treat. The food was plated beautifully, but it was nothing more than OK tasting. The polenta was mushy and tasteless, the gravy sweet and floury tasting and the bison sausage patties tasted like wind-socks. The service was fine, but everyone (wait-staff and customers alike) was conversing as though we were dining on Rodeo Drive in Beverly HIlls. We were extreemly disappointed.

great local place, best organic restaurant in KC, casual yet upscale. This is a wonderful place to eat in Kansas City. It is really unique because they use all organic ingredients and as much local as they can get. I've been there many times for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner and every time I've been extremely pleased. Their staff is always really friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. I love asking them all about the local ingredients and such. I usually go home with one of their daily specials menus. These are so great because they list all the farmers who have delivered fresh produce and meats. The salmon here is to die for, it's served with rice and a spring roll. I also love the ravioli, it's handmade and stuffed with local cheeses. They also have really tasty benedicts. My favorite I think is called the "Summit Street Benedict", its served on a whole wheat (which I love) english muffin, with two poached eggs, red peppers, onions, feta/goat cheese (can't remember which), hollandaise sauce, and topped with capers, it might have mushrooms on it too, I can't remember. It is so yummy. I highly recommend this place to anyone in Kansas City or just visiting. They have a great wine/beer/liquor list with all kinds of local and organic selections. And I have to say hands down they make they BEST bloody marys EVER!! This is a good place to take a vegetarian, almost 1/2 the menu is vegetarian. And they have a great dining area. There's a front part that reminds me of a European bistro, just smaller tables all along the wall, then the backroom is a little cozier, with bigger tables and two really great window tables. My favorite place to sit is in the very front in this halfbooth that sits against this gorgeous window wall, there or one of their outside tables. And the building has a lot of history, I think it's been a drugstore and a speak easy (maybe more I don't remember). I can't say enough about this place. I love it and I hope more people in KC, and outside as well, will enjoy it too.

Best organic food restaurant in Kansas City.. Best place in Kansas City to eat really good organic food. The menu has very good vegetarian choices as well as meat entrees. I was really pleased when the Bluebird Cafe began to include meat in their menu as I am not a vegan. However, as one who eats organic foods, I was delighted to see a menu that embraces the diversity of clientele. There is something here for everyone: hamburgers to tofu, tea to wine. It is not enough to be organic, but it must be tasty too, which the chefs have achieved with success.

I love the ambiance of the place. Bare brick walls, wood floors , tablecloths, and the displays of local artwork lend much to the character that make up Bluebird Cafe. Oh, and I almost forgot...the desserts are to die for! I so enjoy my dining experience that I will continue to patronize this unique and delightful restaurant. Their menu is available online. Happy eating!

Good lunch. No longer purely vegetarian, Bluebird now serves some meat, good curry, and daily specials usually include a pizza and pasta. Just outside downtown, good place to get away for lunch. Now open for dinner on the weekends, and happy hour on friday.
