Mixed reviews, just completed my first and maybe last visit to Torreon. Nice ambiance, but a "booth" is really a table with half of its seats against the wall. Server was very good. Chips were excellent and warm, the salsa was good. I ordered a margarita, "Our fish bowl margarita (house blend) is good" Yuk! It tasted odd, if not weird. And, with an after burn on the tongue. I'll have a regular one, please." A "fish bowl" of ice with a little liquid in it arrived. It tasted like a regular margarita. Ok. I ordered the chicken fajita. My companion, two beef enchiladas, "no onions". The enchiladas were described to me as "basic". When asked, "good, bad or indifferent"? She replied "indifferent". The fajita tasted good, but was more or less, middle of the road as far as fajitas go. The chicken, although not completely "dry", was not moist either. The big shock came when the check arrived. Food prices were reasonable, but they charged $18.00 for 2 margaritas! "You had top shelf". I never requested "top shelf", and there was absolutely nothing special about the two glasses loaded with ice and very little fluid, until some ice melted, that I received. They made no effort to reconsider. So, as I told the hostess, food was ok, but I'll not be back for $9 margaritas.
SuckO de Mayo. What a downer! We have been going to Torreon's for months - food was good and service great - so we invited friends to join us. We were having a fairly good time when our waitress came up to us with our checks! and said it was time for us to give up our table so other guest could use it! We were still drinking and trying to enjoy the music. I went to the owner to complain but it was obvious she cared more about moving people through like cattle than developing long term customers! What a lousy attitude - will never give them a dime of my money again!
The Torreon sucks.
This USED to be a great restaurant, like the previous posts indicate, but it no longer is. The "fishbowl margaritas" are now kitten bowl margaritas, and the price went UP ($6.50) as the glass size went DOWN. There are NO refills on soft drinks, which are $2.25/EACH, including each refill. Conveniently, this is not listed on the menu (the waitress neglected to let us know this as well) as no drink prices are listed. Beer is only sold by the bottle, and is $3.75/bottle, and they have no drink specials ever.
The food is nothing spectacular, it is not bad, but nothing stands out about their food as far as originality goes. This is the same Americanized Mexican fare you will find at any un-authentic Mexican restaurant.
The waitress was impatient, but no wonder, as she could hardly muddle her way through a crammed mosh pit of tables in the space smaller than my living room. I don't remember it being that small or crammed in the past. The only good thing I can say about the place is the ambiance; the music at least sounded authentic and the decor is very tasteful. The portrait/painting of the woman in a white dress on the wall in the wait area is of the owner, and has been on the wall for as long as I can remember.
Better off visiting the Torreador restaurant if you are in the older Overland Park area. You won't feel dangerously claustrophobic, and you won't leave feeling like you've been financially raped.
Hidden treasure in Overland Park.
My family and I have been frequenting this establishment for several years, and I'm so happy I am now able to enjoy the fabulous Fish Bowl Margarita with the rest of my family because it is awesome! Great combos, best tamales in the city, and a great atmosphere!
Check it out in the spring/summer as the nice weather combined with their patio doubles their seating capacity...
Best Food in KC!. My wife and I have enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and exceptional food and drinks since 1989. It is by far the best in KC. I would go as far as saying it is the best in the Midwest. Enjoy!
Best Mexican in KC. This is the best Mexican restaurant in the Greater Kansas City area. Drive right past "On the Border", "Jose Peppers" and "Jalapenos" and come to this place if you want real Mexican food and not corporate Americanized Mexican food.
