Won't be going back. Ok, so we had a Groupon to Sushi Gin, but here's what we experienced. First of all, the diet cokes that we ordered were from a stale 2-liter, I know this because they were flat, but had all the foam at the top of the drinks. The food was sub-par, we've had better sush at other places, but all was going ok until we presented the groupon, apparently my printer blacked out the map on the groupon and the waiter (the only white guy working in a japanese restaurant) takes the groupon and a few minutes later shows up and without any explanation says, "This is unacceptable". My husband I looked at each other in confusion and asked the waiter, What is unacceptable? He said that because the map was blacked out he couldn't accept it because it looked like it had been copied. So I pulled the confirmation email up on my phone and showed him where I had paid for the coupon. I had never been talked to that way by a waiter at any restaurant before.The only relief to this terrible experience was our next stop, Blue Chip Cookie, which brought a ray of light on a dark cold winter night.
FIRST TIME and I can't wait to go back. Last Saturday, because of the I-435 road construction, I took a different way home, realizing I was hungry, I opened my Androids Happy Hour App from the Pitch, top of the list was Sushi Gin. Very easy to find, wonderful atmosphere. The wait staffed was very attentive to my every need. So many great happy hour prices, I started out with an adventurous squid salad for only $3, very nice. What was even kewler to find was that they have a sake tray with 5 different kinds of shots to try for only $10, which went great with my FRIED SUSHI! That's right, FRIED, it was AMAZING!!!! OMG, it was heaven in my mouth. I couldn't believe how good it was for how little it cost. Only thing that made it any better was dipping it in their fresh made spicy wasabi mayo sauce. I can't wait to go back.
Best Sushi in town. It's the only place to eat Sushi at in Kansas City. The staff is exceptionally nice and have taken the time to get to know me. They remember what I order, what I drink and my birthday. I've traveled all around the world and unless your in Japan this is the closest your going to get to amazing sushi!!
Good Food, but Don't Expect Any Customer Service!. When we went to Sushi Gin, the waiter brough a main dish that I had not ordered. (I ordered Shrimp Tempura....I KNOW what that looks like!) When I said to the waiter before he even left out table that my meal wasn't correct, he apologized and went to check in with the owner (a woman). She refused to take it back, saying, "We don't redo customers' meals." I was appalled. We went back and forth and she refused to budge, saying insulting things like, "You have no proof that you ordered the tempura!" I left without eating. I was very appalled at the customer service, and although we have eaten there a dozen times, we will not be going back. VERY disappointing.
The real story. Having lived in Japan a long time I can tell ya' Sushi Gin is as good a place as you'll find in the KC area. They've always been busy but the service was good and it's a relative bargain. It's not a fancy place but it's clean and makes an attempt at Japanese decor, they even have a 'tatami' room. All too often it's the people with sour grapes in their mouths that write reviews so I want to make it clear, if you want real Japanese cuisine at a reasonable price, Sushi Gin is the place to go in Overland Park. Honestly, the other places should have to state their food is sushi-like or Japanesque... I like Asian Fusion but I want to know that's what I'm getting up front. And, remember, if you're making comparisons, a Japanese Steakhouse is really American food with a Japanese twist created after WWII in Occupied Japan. To the person with the credit card issue, better get used to it, I imagine a lot of places are going to be offering discounts for cash or charging a premium to cover their card processing costs so they don't have to raise menu prices. Besides, if you'd gone to any other sushi place you'd have paid more and gotten less. $1.50, really???
Go to Sushi House Instead. The food was ok. Your attitude towards customers and purchase policies was inexcusable. The idea that you need an additional 3% for running more than one credit card for a group is absurd. That amounted to more than $1.50 on my bill alone. You are penalizing me as a customer for behavior you don’t like. Mission accomplished; I’ll never present you more than one card again because I’m never coming to your restaurant again. Your excuses only irritated me and made me resolve to tell everyone I know about my experience. I recommend Sushi House.
Rude rude rude rude rude. Bad sushi. Gross.. My sister and I ate for the first, AND LAST, time tonight at Sushi Gin. The host seemed annoyed that we were there and let another couple sit before us and made a rude comment about us under his breath while he walked them to the table. Next, we sat for 45 minutes while we waited for our food, and had to ask for me-so soup and salad.. which was never brought to us. Finally our food arrived and although it was decent sushi for a cheap&fast place, it was poorly wrapped, falling apart, and just off. The last and final straw was after I left cash on the table and a 20% tip that was definitely not earned, the man chased after me and asked if I intended to pay for my meal. I politely told him that I had left more than enough on the table and he should not assume and insult customers of not paying.
What sushi should be. It seems there is a mix of great reviews and poor reviews for Sushi Gin. This is rather unfortunate, because for the serious sushi eater it is heaven. Sure it doesn't have a fancy inside or any of the frills of a trendy sushi place, but who needs those? I find it especially comical how one reviewer complained about the chef's lack of English speaking abilities. That's because he is Japanese. You should be thrilled to have an actual Japanese native preparing your sushi, a rarity around these parts. Although I can't really speak for the maki (rolls) that much, I know that the nigiri is VERY solid. And for one dollar a piece?! How can you beat that?! I myself have been to Japan and tried the sushi there. Sushi Gin would be considered average in Japan. This however is a major compliment in this area much less the US. I have even taken a visiting friend from Japan here and they were pleasantly surprised! So there you have it. If you are a serious sushi eater, a big fan of nigiri, or just someone looking to get out of the California Roll phase, make sure to give Sushi Gin a shot. Great nigiri at great prices. I won't go anywhere else!
My beautiful fiance and I have tried this place twice. The first time was a year ago, it was nothing special. We decided to try it again the other night. What a horrible experience.
1. The Sushi Chef barely speaks English or much of anything.
2. We asked for straws for our water, just because we already don't trust the place. They waiter seemed confused by our request, and then told us they normally don't give straws for water glasses. Does it matter? Isn't it his job to please the customer?
3. We asked for jalape?os with our sushi, just because we were in a spicy mood. This seemed to take an act of congress. 3 employees later and an extra charge we finally got a jalape?o.... Are you kidding me? Other Sushi houses are pleased with this request. Other Sushi chefs are impressed with our creativity.
Our money will be well spent elsewhere!!! The wedding dinner will be at another sushi bar.
Maybe the worst sushi I've ever had. Even the edamame was sub-par. I recently moved here from L.A., and had a serious sushi jones. I went to Sushi gin full of hope only to have it dashed like the Pacifac on a Malibu shore. I will get my sushi from Hen House before I return to the Gin. STAY AWAY!
