The pride of Kansas City isn't most of the places you've heard about; rather, it's to be found in a random-looking gas station that just happens to produce some of the country's very best barbecue.
What's the deal about this place. KC has great BBQ - this place was "okay" according to KC standards. Pork was dry... bread was dry... I've had better beans. Ambiance was okay.
One of the best in KC. Good meat, great sauce, and too many fries. I have yet to order anything off of the menu and been disappointed (and I've been then more than a couple of times). In my opinion the sauce is what seperates the good from the great and this place has got it figured out!!! If you go for lunch, get there early or expect to wait. Seating is sparce, but it seems like there is always something available. Don't let the location scare you away, people think I'm crazy when I say KC's best BBQ shares it's location with a gas station, but it's true. Be sure to check out the lunch special and save a couple of bucks.
Top 3 BBQ Joint in KC.
Oklahoma Joe's is a great place to experience the world famous KC BBQ. Located in a gas station on Kansas City's westside I was shocked how great the food was upon my first visit. Since then I have become a frequent visitor of this food establishment. I strongly recommend the Z-man sandwich for any first time visitor and the french fries are addicitive. The atmosphere is different. If you visit during the lunch hour it will normally is very busy, and you may have to wait for 15 plus minutes. Also seating can be difficult to find. If you happen to visit OK Joe's with a group I would suggest having one person in your party reserving a table while the rest of the group orders lunch.
The food is very reasonable priced and it is to die for. But be forewarned that if you visit other BBQ establishments OKlahoma Joe's sets the bar very high. Once you get a taste of OK Joe's it may be difficult for you to visit other BBQ restaurants in the future. I hope you enjoy it as well as my family and I do.
Editorial Review by Christy Buena. Known for its barbecue, the family-friendly restaurant is ideal for groups and serves affordable food and offers catering.
Just Plain Nasty!!!. My job had Oklahoma Joe's cater for our picnic and their food was "just plain nasty". The sauce wasn't even that good. In order to eat the bland meat (beef and pork) i had to drown it in Barbecue sauce and i saw that everyone else did the same. The sauce wasn't even that good. And don't let me start on the baked beans......OMG I have never in my life had beans that bad. Oklahoma Joe's is a Waste of Money and so obviously overated.
decent BBQ awful beans. I'll admit that BBQ is a personal thing, but OK Joe's is not mine. The ribs are okay, but the beans are just nasty.
Best Sandwich Ever. has anyone tasted a better sandwich than the Zman? I moved away but still have Okie Joe's ship me BBQ sauce. Best BBQ i've ever had, hands down.
Great food!. I must say that Oklahoma Joe's has the best fries and barbeque that I have tasted in KC(15-years). Great Value!!! With the food being such a great value during lunch and dinner times they are very crowded with next to nowhere for you to park, but it's worth it. The staff is always pleasant regardless of the rush. I would have to agree with the atmosphere, being inside of a gas station and next to a liquior store, to not be the most comfortable spot to dine in. Most of the places that put all the $$$ into the atmosphere are falling short when it come to some good quality tasting food. Maybe the ohter BBQ spots should have their menu catered by Ok Joe's!?!?!?
One of my favorites. My folks have a Locker Plant in Iowa and I have developed a discriminating taste for good food since I have eaten the best since growing up. Oklahoma Joes makes my favorite sandwich in K.C. it is called the 'Z-man'. Provolone cheese, an onion ring or 2 on top of brisket with sauce. It is spectacular. As for the ambience if you want a more polished restraunt there is a new OK. Joes in Olathe that I haven't been to yet but I like the authenticity of the Gas station/liquor store. Granted I wouldn't take a first date here but I would take a third date here if she was really cool. A very casual place to eat.
Yumm!. We have gone out of our way to eat at Oklahoma Joe's. The BBQ is awesome. I love the pulled pork and the fries! The ribs are really good too, but I have to say the pulled pork is my favorite. Their sausage is really good also.
