Magnifique!. I just ate at Cafe des Amis for the third time in two years, I am in love with the place! The service is always excellent, despite the fact that the manager is also serving most of the tables himself. Although the bill usually comes out at about $130 for two people, this has always included aperitifs, salads, entrees with red wine, desserts, cordials, and coffee. While this may seem like a lot, the price for this kind of meal would be nearly the same at any other French restaurant in the area. I like to start dinner there with an anise-flavoured aperitif, such as Ricard or Pernod, then move on to the goat cheese salad. The "cote d'agneau" (order it rare or "saignant" if you speak French) is absolutely amazing, and the dessert menu includes many favorites such as the vanilla and chocolate creme brulee pair, not to mention a wide selection of dessert cordials (I recommend the Armagnac).

If you come there expecting fast in-and-out service and the typically American gut-busting portions, then you will be disappointed. French cuisine is a delicious and delicate art -- not a 3,000 calorie gorgefest. I walk out of Cafe des Amis feeling full but never stuffed. Actually I leave feeling amazing.

AVOID - OVER PRICED & FOOD AVERAGE. Had been looking forward to dinner here and hopes were raised going up the wooden stairs to the restaurant. First appearances in the entryway boded well until led to stark and unattractive dining room. Then my first appetizer arriced and I was disappointed with a sandy/gritty scallop dish with perhaps 2 scallops at most. Told waiter about the dish having sand in it and he just sniffed and if it was our fault! Entrees were equally pathetic.... I had halibut with spoonful of Uncle Ben's wild rice and count them, 3 tiny asparagus spears all for only $27.00. Partner had salmon in nice creme sauce. Dessert ok but for $110 (this included just 2 glasses of wine) this joint wouldn't fly for a day in Paris (where we just came from in April). Very disappointing with the indifference of the chef and waiter. Would never go back. Fortunately got to renew my love with some KC restaurants with a meal at 40 Sardines. A difference of night and day. Avoid a costly mistake and I suggest sending these boys back to the chef school.

Fantastic Romantic Setting. Take your lover for on a romantic European getaway to an authenic French restaurant hidden above lovely Parkville. Sit on one of two outdoor decks, secluded from the surroundings. Whether dining underneath the stars or lunching in the shade, you will have a magical, romantic, and memorable experience. Enjoy the leisure of European dining, linger after your meal, absorb the ambience, sip your wine, and hold hands. The service is impeccable, but truly European -- you will never be rushed as they keep away until you give them a wink or wave to summon them, and you must request the check. In Europe, it is considered rude to rush diners. We fear some locals may consider the service poor if they have to wait, or ask for, their check. Keep this in mind and ENJOY the wonderment of Cafe Des Amis.
